St. Petersburg accepts delegations of parliamentarians from the five continents

The opening ceremony of the 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will take place in the evening.The Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded in 1889 and today unites parliamentarians from 173 countries of the world. The main tasks are the development of parliamentarism, respect for human rights and, of course, the preservation of peace and international security. Today the Interparliamentary Union is one of the oldest and most authoritative parliamentary organizations in the world. 100 heads of foreign parliaments and delegations from 150 countries of the world arrived in St. Petersburg. The total number of registered participants is about 2500 people. The program and topics of discussion are extensive. These are issues of democracy and human rights, finance and trade, the fight against terrorism and international security. A forum of women parliamentarians and a forum of young parliamentarians will also take place.

The Belarusian parliamentary delegation is headed by the Chairman of the Council of the Republic. Also at the assembly, a new chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will be elected for a three-year term. For this position there are two candidates from Mexico and Uruguay.
