This week, the European Parliament voted in favor of a resolution calling on the European Union structures to impose severe sanctions against representatives of the Belarusian authorities.
The recommendations in the document include increased funding for civil society in the country, the suspension of negotiations on the priorities of the European partnership, and the termination of lending by the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
However, it is worth noting here what the European Parliament meeting was silent about. The adopted resolution belongs to the category of non-legislative documents, it has only a recommendatory nature and is not obligatory for implementation by EU institutions and governments of member states. One can say, this is a verbal threat.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said that the resolution is aggressive and does not contain constructive or balanced theses. The Council of the Republic assessed the resolution as an open interference in the internal affairs of the country trying to bring a split into the Belarusian society, to destabilize the political and economic situation instead of dealing with the problems of their own countries: the fall of their economies, the increase in the number of unemployed, the second wave of the pandemic that is taking lives, thousands of protest actions, suppressed by repressive bodies.
