Belarusian initiatives discussed at OSCE Ministerial Council Meeting in Milan

6 декабря 2018

The chief initiative among them is redefining the spirit and essence of the Helsinki process, its adaptation to new reality. This was stated at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

Vladimir Makei stressed that, unfortunately, we fail to resolve the conflicts in the OSCE region. But the organization itself remains hostage to geopolitics. Dangerous build-up of military capabilities and military presence in each other's boundaries continues. In this case, the internal political and even personal ambitions prevail over the interests of general security. Therefore, the OSCE should double its efforts to address the challenges that threaten the security of Europe.

The main themes of the OSCE Ministerial Council Meeting in Milan were the issues of settlement of the situation in the east of Ukraine and in other crisis points in the region. Such issues were discussed as the incident in the Kerch Strait, Nagorno-Karabakh, the migratory crisis and coordination of efforts to combat terrorism. The ministerial meeting will continue tomorrow. It is expected that Vladimir Makei will hold a number of bilateral talks.
