Full-fledged and representative Parliament elected in Belarus

By Andrei Krivosheyev: During a press conference on the parliamentary election results, the Central Election Commission Chair Lidia Yermoshina focused on high voter turnout, a small number of complaints and the quality of the new Parliament, which includes more women, has preserved continuity and represents more political parties.

The parliamentary elections were monitored by over 800 international and more than 32,000 national observers. Following the press conference, the observers summed up the results of their work. According to the experts, the elections are marked by high competitiveness and no uncontested constituencies.

OSCE and Council of Europe observers stressed the progress and desire to continue working jointly with the Belarusian authorities to improve democratic procedures. Belarus’ Foreign Minister has met with the short-term mission coordinator and the OSCE/ODIHR mission head today. As a result, an agreement to continue cooperating on electoral matters has been reached.
