Belarus hosts today a joint meeting of foreign ministers of the two countries. Among the issues under discussion is cooperation on the international arena: the interaction with the European Union and the EAEU, the work to combat attempts at rethinking the results of the Second World War.
According to the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, the outgoing year was full of ambiguous events, many of which defy national security. The situation is worsened by the lack of trust and willingness to compromise, which is observed in recent years on the world stage, Vladimir Makei says.
In general, the parties have characterized the relations between the countries as trust-based. On most foreign policy issues, the positions of Belarus and Russia coincide. Cooperation with the European Union was discussed as well. In February, the EU lifted the sanctions against Belarus that have been in force for a long time. Vladimir Makei says that, despite some progress, there is still a long way to go till full normalization of relations with Brussels. Diplomats also discussed efforts to achieve the UN goals of sustainable development, Chernobyl initiatives and cooperation between Belarus and Russia in the framework of the IAEA.
