Belarus to move towards greater autonomy of local governments

29 апреля 2019

The development of regions in our country is one of the priorities. Belarus will continue to move towards greater autonomy of local governments, based on our traditions and borrowing the best European experience. This position was voiced today by the Head of State at a meeting with the chairman of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.  Local government is a multifaceted concept. All the nuances of this issue today were discussed at the Palace of Independence.

Anders Knape, Chairman of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe: "Today during the meeting we were unanimous in the opinion that it is very important to deepen cooperation between the Council of Europe, the Congress and Belarus. We also talked about introducing amendments to the Belarusian legislation on local self-government. This is not a quick process. We do not have all the answers. But we can learn from each other, share our experience. A successful society is built on strong local self-government bodies. Belarus has always been and is of interest to us."
