A meeting of European experts and a working group of the Parliament with the newly elected deputies of local councils took place in Mogilev. As stated during the meeting, Belarus is ready for an open dialogue on the issue of the death penalty with international organizations.

Over 20 years ago, the Belarusians voted yes in a referendum to keep the death penalty in the country. Currently, lawyers, diplomats, and politicians are sharing their opinions on the issue from the point of view of legal norms. Such forums have already taken place in Grodno and Brest.

Andrei Naumovich, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus"We invite international experts to discuss this issue. I want to express my gratitude to everyone as well. Everyone has been very active in coming to us to help us discuss the matter."

Nicolas Perron, the Program Director of Together Against the Death Penalty (France): "We are committed to cooperation with Belarus in this area. Over the past 20 years, we have noted very important positive changes in the country – the number of people who were sentenced to death has reduced. We need to work together and continue our work in this direction."

During the visit to Mogilev, international experts and parliamentarians met with the lawyers of the regional court, as well as students.
