Belarus suspends the readmission agreement with the European Union. The head of state introduced the corresponding bill to the parliament. The freezing of the agreement is a response to the unfriendly actions taken by the EU with regard to Belarus.

Aleksei Dzermant, political scientist, researcher of the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus:

We have assumed this obligation within the framework of this good-neighborliness, rapprochement with the EU, which has been taking place in recent years. But we have seen how last year the EU took an extremely unfriendly attitude towards Belarus: supported the sanctions and did not hesitate to apply political, diplomatic and economic pressure. And in this case, of course, we do not have the responsibility to assume any obligations, to solve the EU problems, and it makes no sense. Why should we spend money on the return of these refugees, maintenance, border protection and so on? These are the problems of the EU now, which has decided to zero out relations with us, to destroy a lot of things that have been done. And, we are responding according to our national interest. The way we see it, the way we think we should.
