Today deputies pass bill to toughen liability for driving while drunk

An automobile will be confiscated for the second drunken driving per year.



By Vadim Shcheglov: Despite the impressive package of documents which was considered today at the Belarusian parliament, journalists and deputies were waiting for the main bill - to toughen the liability for driving while drunk. The bill was introduced by the President and today deputies passed it in two readings.


But before all this were meetings of expert groups, public opinion researches, many discussions on forums, in press, on television. During the press conference of Alexander Lukashenko for the Belarusian and foreign mass media, the President also asked about the order on roads.


Since the January press conference 16,000 drunk drivers have been arrested and each tenth of them have been arrested for the second time. The law was passed unanimously.


Automobiles of only those drivers who got behind a wheel drunk at least twice a year will be confiscated, and even here the state gives a chance to better. Drink driving fines will be increased to 10 million rubles. Criminal penalties will be toughened - deprivation of freedom from 5 to 10 years, if a drunk driver struck and killed a person.


The General Prosecutor's Office has initiated formal recognition of records of an event data recorder as evidences in court.
