Alexander Lukashenko and relevant ministers discussed how ready departments and infrastructure are for new passports.

The ID-card will be used as an internal document in many ways similar to a driver's license. But a biometric passport is needed to travel to other countries. The government proposes to start digitalization on April 30. The President is not against it, but demands to achieve maximum security of the data of Belarusians.

The introduction of new passports does not repeal the old ones. Documents are valid until the end of the term. Therefore, the replacement will take place gradually. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, up to 800 000 ID-cards and 300 000 biometric passports will be issued this year.
