Parliament plans to consider easing sentence for certain types of drug offenses

10 июня 2019

Easing in the legislation on certain types of narcotic crimes is planned to be considered in Parliament on June 13. The number of crimes has reduced in this area which allows for changing approaches to punishment. It is expected that the lower threshold of punishment will be reduced by two years. So for a drug dealer the punishment will be from 3 to 8 years of imprisonment. For groups, officials and repeat offenders - from 6 to 15 years. This will allow applying the punishment individually and differentially.

The last time changes in this area were made five years ago in 2014. The need for tougher penalties was dictated by the emerging criminal situation and the lack of legislation that would allow it to respond adequately. Effective and timely measures of Decree No. 6 allowed bringing down the wave of drug trafficking and fatal cases, especially among adolescents. The measures were aimed primarily at protecting the interests of children and young people.
