By Polina Ivancha: On the day of the Great Victory they will rise to the height of over 6,000 meters and place the Belarusian flag there. The other day, amateur climbers headed by Sergei Varivoda set off for an expedition to the Indian Himalayas. The team consists of 24 people. Stok Kangri will be conquered by doctors, journalists, businessmen, lawyers, and students. And the youngest member of the expedition is only 10 years old.
The peak of Stok Kangri in the Indian Himalayas is the most interesting route for climbing. However, the main season for the ascent will begin in July.
Sergey Varivoda, leader of the expedition: "Climbers have to make an extra physical effort and use special means of movement, well, let's say, snowshoes. Of course, this creates certain avalanche danger in a seismically active region."
Despite this, the team of 24 Belarusian climbers still decided to take the risk.
Anna Avgul, member of the expedition: "Our whole team decided to dedicate the ascent to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. And for us it is not an empty phrase, for us it's really important, for me in particular. I am a person who grew up without both grandfathers, one was shot fascists. Another returned from the front, but died soon, and I missed him."
The average atmospheric pressure at Stok Kangri is only half of the normal level pressure flat Belarus. Despite this, the team made the ascent without oxygen. If everything works, the flag of Belarus-1 will be waving next to the national flag of Belarus on May 9.
