10-year-old girl's heart transplanted for the first time in Belarus

18 июня 2019

The operation took place in early June and today, on her birthday, the patient feels fine and accepts gifts from doctors. In the history of Belarusian medicine, the main organ was transplanted to a child under 18 years just three times.

Darya Kirikovich became the first child in our country to whom a heart was transplanted at such a young age. The operation was performed by three surgeons and an anesthesiologist.

Sergey Spiridonov, Deputy Director for Surgical Assistance of RSPC "CARDIOLOGY": "The problem is that it is not very easy to choose a donor organ for such a small organism. Therefore, the heart must also be small in size so that it can fit in the chest."

Achievements of this level immediately become the property of world cardiologists. By the way, surgeons from London will arrive in our country in a couple of days to learn how to perform operations using heart models printed on a 3D printer.

Last year, cardiologists from Germany underwent an internship. In the near future, experts from Poland and Romania plan to attend the training. Our surgeons, in turn, regularly go for internships in France, and in Italy and America

About half a hundred heart transplants are performed in Belarus every year. And today, our doctors, not without pride, state that Belarusian doctors skillfully struggle with any of the 250 existing heart defects.
