This is, to put it mildly, a strange decision of our neighboring country. Ukraine imposed a special duty on imports of Belarusian buses, trucks and special vehicles amounting to 35 per cent of the customs value. Thus, it effectively banned the import of our equipment. Earlier, Lviv refused to buy a hundred of Belarusian MAZ buses under the pretext of "the political situation in Belarus".
According to renowned Ukrainian economist and political analyst Oleksandr Dudchak, the actions of the Ukrainian authorities have purely political overtones and are dictated from outside. The expert believes that by pursuing such an economic policy, the country risks harming its consumers in the first place.
Oleksandr Dudchak, political analyst, economist (Ukraine): "Politics could not but affect the economy and the relationship between Ukraine and Belarus. Ukraine acts strictly according to the instructions of its senior partners in the West. It maintains its position exclusively within the framework of the set policy of the United States with regard to Belarus. Now Ukrained harmed itself, because it had quite normal, stable and mutually beneficial relations with Belarus".
