By Marina Romanovskaya: Veterans from Belarus, Russia and Latvia gathered at the Mound of Friendship prior to Belarus’ Independence Day in memory of the heroic past and fraternal unity of the nations to lay flowers and wreaths.

The symbol of frontline brotherhood, heroism and love for the Motherland, the Mound of Friendship was established at the initiative of partisans and underground movement members to commemorate the joint struggle with the enemy during the Great Patriotic War. The tradition to annually meet at the junction of the three states emerged at the same time.

The Mound itself is located in Latvia’s territory, while the concert venue and museum are situated in the territories of Russia and Belarus respectively. Monuments in honor of Great Patriotic War heroes and events are located on each of the border territories.
