International Day of Persons with Disabilities was established by the UN General Assembly in 1992. Belarus is home to about half a million people with disabilities. Providing social protection to such people is one of the country’s policy priorities. Programmes on improving their quality of life and integration into society are being implemented. Rehabilitation facilities are operating and modern technical means for social rehabilitation are being introduced to create a barrier-free environment. The social protection system also includes social support from the state, such as pensions, allowances and state targeted assistance.
