Today marks Ascension Day, one of the 12 main Christian holidays. According to the New Testament, Jesus took his disciples to a mountain on the 40th day after his resurrection to say goodbye to earthly life and, after blessing them, ascended to heaven. The ascension after the 40 days of earthly life formed the basis of the Christian tradition and belief in eternal life.
Ascension Day precedes the Feast of the Holy Trinity, which is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter.
