Import substitution of food and food additives, as well as increased exports of goods is our current objective. To enter new markets we need to confirm the quality of products. This is also the area of responsibility of the Scientific and Research Center of Food of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Today the center is also a member of the interdepartmental working group, which solves an important task - to find a useful substitute for products from school tuck-shops to have less sweets and chips. Scientists are also involved in a pilot project to develop a new menu for educational institutions. The first results were reported to Prime Minister today. The number of vegetables in dishes has been increased, and the fat content in products has been reduced.
Roman Golovchenko drew attention to the need to reduce the amount of sugar on the school table.
Roman Golovchenko, Prime Minister of Belarus:
We will start saturating school cafeterias with the products that you have declared as modern, safe and more suitable for schoolchildren's nutrition. All manufacturers must adjust to this.
Alexei Meleshchenya, Director General of Scientific and Research Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Food:
“Now we are working out how widespread the use of dumplings will be. Maybe we will work out a technology of French fries production, so it would have a lower oil content and it would not contradict the norms of nutrition. There is an issue of chocolate glazed curd bars. We are also trying to improve the recipe to reduce the sugar content there a little bit.”
The pilot project in Minsk schools will last until May, and then it will sweep the country. From the new year, all metropolitan and regional schools will join in, and from the third quarter, regional schools, especially rural educational institutions will be involved. They need a little more time to change the components in the dishes.
