President Alexander Lukashenko signed Decree No.105 on the Constitutional Commission. The document was adopted to implement the resolution of the 6th All-Belarusian People's Assembly.
The Constitutional Commission was instructed to develop proposals to amend the Basic Law and ensure their nationwide discussion. It is endowed with the right, if necessary, to involve the heads and specialists of state bodies and other organizations in the work. By August 1, the Constitutional Commission must submit to the head of state the proposals to amend the Basic Law for their subsequent submission to a republican referendum.
The commission includes 36 people. These are representatives of state bodies, lawyers, representatives of public associations, various sectors of the economy and the social sphere, young people will also present their ideas. The commission will be headed by Chairman of the Constitutional Court, Honored Lawyer of Belarus Pyotr Miklashevich.
The President met with those who are to work on the main document of the country. The Prime Minister and the head of the Administration were also present at the Palace of Independence. They are not part of the Constitutional Commission. But both the government and the Administration, within their competence, will participate in this great work. Proposals to amend the Basic Law were received both at the dialogue platforms and through the parliamentary line. All ideas are to be analyzed by the commission.
It is important not to lose the best of previous experience. The current document has not expired. This is evidenced by the result of the opinion poll, which was recently held in Belarus. Most of the respondents consider the current Basic Law to be relevant. Belarus was formed as a sovereign peaceful state due to it. Given the realities and new risks, there is a need to update the document. Work on it will be public.
