The memory of the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy is honored today in Minsk.
In honor of the 36th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, liquidators, rescuers, local officials and young people came to the Peoples' Friendship Park on April 26. The Chernobyl accident affected a large part of Belarus: 3,678 communities with 2,200,000 inhabitants were contaminated with radioactive fallout.
Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus:
Belarus ensures transparency of BelNPP operation
Today is not only a day to commemorate the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy, but also a day to look to the future, emphasized Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Ambrazevich. That is why the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets is taken so seriously by the government. Our state does everything to ensure the transparency of its operation, including with the help of international mechanisms.
The activities to introduce nuclear facilities at the Ignalinsky NPP are of particular concern lately. I would like to note that the Lithuanian side evades its commitments within the IAEA. We expect them to cooperate more seriously on a bilateral basis. The recent events in Ukraine that took place at the nuclear power plants are also cause for concern. As it was stated at the briefing by Russian diplomats in the UN, the provocations prepared by the Ukrainian army at these facilities cannot but cause concern. The topic deserves the closest attention in the international arena. We understand what the consequences could be,” the diplomat stressed.
