The ICAO report on the Ryanair incident does not stand up to any scrutiny. This was stated today to journalists by the Director of the Department of Aviation of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The ICAO has recently considered two issues: the incident with the Ryanair flight over the skies of Belarus on May 23, 2021, and the complaint of Belarus about the actions of several European states, imposing sanctions against the civil aviation of our country.
Artem Sikorski, director of the aviation department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Belarus:
“This report does not stand up to any scrutiny. It is absolutely unacceptable and discredits ICAO as an international technical body dealing with civil aviation. We strongly disagree with it. Russia's official representative and ICAO Council member also disagreed with the report, pointing out a number of errors, inaccuracies, non-aviation and biased approaches.”
The European aviation officials failed to turn a blind eye to the obvious facts. Point 3.9.5 of the ICAO report: "There was no escort or interception of Ryanair aircraft by a military aircraft in the airspace of Belarus." This is an important postulate: there was no interception.
As for Belarus' complaint about European sanctions and "closed skies," our country's position was supported by China, Russia, South Africa, India and other countries. As a result, the ICAO Council could not remove this issue from the agenda and will have to reconsider it.
