A unique operation was performed by pediatric surgeons on a baby weighing just over a kilogram. The girl was born 11 weeks ahead of schedule and with a heart defect. Doctors of the Republican Center for Pediatric Surgery fought for her life. Doctors performed the operation using a low-invasive method. It was successful. Alice is now under medical supervision.
Yuri Linnik, head of the department of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Surgery: "She had a congenital heart defect, which is quite common for children who are born with extremely low body weight. There was a suspicion of coarctation of the aorta. It is very important to diagnose such things in time and remove them surgically. The child is not in danger today, but it must be considered that the girl's body weight is still small, so she needs additional special care."
More than a thousand small patients with heart disease are operated there every year. Half of the operations are performed by the low-invasive method.
