A new memorial sign to prisoners of concentration camps became part of the Fifth Regiment memorial in Vitebsk. It was designed by famous sculptor Sergei Sotnikov. Composition in the form of a map of Vitebsk Region marks places where the Nazis created death camps, ghettos and prisons. The author depicted concentration camp prisoners who were held by the Nazis in inhuman conditions.
A camp for the mass destruction of Soviet prisoners of war was created on the outskirts of Vitebsk in 1941. Later, civilians were also brought here. People were bullied and starved to death. During the occupation, more than 80 000 people died in the camp.
