The hatred of Ukrainians towards the Russian people and the Russian language has been nurtured since the World War II. This was stated by Alena Levitskaya, a teacher of the cadet corps in the city of Donetsk. According to her, this became evident in the early 2000s, when they wanted to completely eradicate the Russian language from all spheres. They did this gradually: they translated films, documentation, and created TV programs in Ukrainian. The referendum in April 2014 was a turning point in the country's fate: the first helicopters, shelling, and deaths. No one could have imagined that it would start and last for 8 years.
Alena Levitskaya, teacher of the A.V. Zakharchenko Cadet Corps in Donetsk:
“The war started on May 26. I remember it clearly. On that day my child went to school, and I went to school to write an application, and our school is five minutes away - on the next street. I entered the school and the teacher said to me: "You know, helicopters are flying, they started shelling. I said, "You've got to be kidding!" I didn't believe it, I wrote an application, came out and saw helicopters. It was terrifying.”
