Sad news came this afternoon. The first Prime Minister of Belarus Vyacheslav Kebich is gone. He passed away short of his 85th birthday. Alexander Lukashenko expressed condolences to the family and friends of the Belarusian politician.
Doctors fought to the last for Vyacheslav Kebich's life. He spent two weeks under the supervision of specialists and following all prescriptions of physicians in hospital.
Having received engineering education, Vyacheslav Kebich made a managerial career in the machine-building complex. He was engaged in party work at the time of perestroika. He was deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers, chairman of the State Planning Committee of the BSSR. In 1990, the politician headed the Belarusian government. In December 1991, Kebich was one of those who signed the Belovezhsky agreements to create the Commonwealth of Independent States. In 1994, at the first presidential elections of sovereign Belarus, he was an opponent of Alexander Lukashenko. Later he was a deputy of the House of Representatives and headed the Belarusian Trade and Financial Union. Despite the obvious rivalry, the former prime minister later positioned himself as a supporter of the Belarusian development model of the sovereign country proposed by the first President. Kebich was impressed by the policy of strengthening the alliance with Russia.
