Cell phone named potential source of E. coli and staphylococcus aureus transmission

Oksana Chikina, head of epidemiological department of Israeli Hadassah clinic branch in Skolkovo (Medskan Group), told Gazeta.ru what infections live on the surface of phones.  The epidemiologist asserts that there are pathogenic flora on the surface of smartphones.

According to her, scientists from the Iraqi University of Kufa assessed the bacterial contamination of the surface of 300 cell phones. "It was found that 86% of cell phone surfaces were contaminated with an average bacterial count, including normal skin flora, but pathogenic flora was also present," Oksana Chikina said. According to the study, Staphylococcus aureus accounted for 20% of detected microorganisms, pneumococcus accounted for 12%, E. coli and Enterococcus faecalis for 9% each. Also Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella, and bacterial dysentery pathogen were detected on the phone cases.
