World not coping with climate crisis, UN believes

The world is not coping with the climate crisis, global actions to combat it have stalled over the past year, and national climate plans do not take into account the latest scientific data. This is stated in a new report by experts of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, reports BelTA.

The report notes that the international community is still not taking measures that would limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and prevent a climate catastrophe. The authors of the report point out that despite the intensification of action by some countries, much more effort is needed to significantly reduce global emissions.

"Under current national plans, global greenhouse gas emissions are projected to increase by 9% from 2010 levels by 2030. Yet the scientific evidence is crystal clear: if we are to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, emissions by the end of this decade must be reduced by 45% from 2010 levels," UN Secretary General António Guterres said on the occasion of the report's release.

"As climate chaos wreaks havoc on communities around the world with even more widespread floods, fires and droughts, the gap between actions that must be taken and real action is becoming ever more threatening," the UN chief emphasized.
