Mendkovich: Nuclear weapons deployment in Belarus does not violate international norms

Belarus is strengthening its national security. The deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in our country makes it possible to prevent encroachments on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the republic, as well as to secure the Union State from external threats. At the same time, this step does not violate international norms.

Russian political scientist Nikita Mendkovich reminds: the US has been placing such weapons on the territories of its allies and also on the territories of third non-nuclear countries for decades.

Nikita Mendkovich, political analyst, head of the Eurasian Analytical Club, expert of the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs:

“The deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus cannot be a violation of international laws because we form a single Union State, we have common sovereignty. On its territory, our Union State can freely move any material objects, people, as it needs. Moreover, I would like to draw attention to the fact that if we talk about massive violation of international law, the United States and NATO are now guilty of this, placing their nuclear weapons, including in the territory of third non-nuclear states, for example, the United States and Britain are actively using Belgium for this purpose.”

"By cooperating with Russia in the military sphere, including in the sphere of nuclear deterrence, the Republic of Belarus increases its international security, protection of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is openly infringed by NATO and Western countries," the expert said.
