Belarus sees the true objectives of the activities carried out by the NATO. This was stated today by Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting in the Ministry of Defence on military security.
We pay special attention to the security in the country. Seeing and objectively assessing the situation in Belarus and beyond its borders from the military point of view is a requirement of the commander-in-chief. Developments on the external contour show that a course for aggravation of relations with Russia and Belarus has been taken.
Under the guise of defence, a military presence is being built up near the borders and large-scale exercises are being held. In fact, the President stresses, they are working on the issues of deployment of troops, creation and use of groups.
Thus, according to the President, it is necessary to define the main directions for the development of our army. Given that the level of military threats to Belarus may increase, measures should be taken as soon as possible. After the latest events the modernization of the Armed Forces was viewed in a new light.
Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
Look, when we met with you recently, before Russia's military operation in Ukraine, we thought very differently about the further development and modernization of our Armed Forces. Three months of confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, this military operation, we saw that we don't need to carry out the kind of modernization that we were trying to do then: very costly for our republic, for our conditions in general, unacceptable. We understood what kind of army we should have.Belarus has learned the lessons of developing and equipping its troops, informed the Minister of Defence. This work will be carried out in several directions. But most importantly, according to Viktor Khrenin, the armed forces in our country are not a tool to wage a war, they are a tool to prevent it.
