Radioactive contaminated territory in Belarus reduces

21 апреля 2021

The list of areas with radioactive contamination over the past five years has reduced by 170 positions. But it still includes 2022 settlements. In total, approximately 10% of the population lives in the contaminated area. The radiation monitoring of the affected areas is held every five years.

Petr Nikolayenko, Deputy Head of Department on Mitigation of the Aftermath of Chernobyl NPP Catastrophe at the Ministry of Emergencies  of Belarus: "There is a special program, which gathers all the relevant data. Based on this methodology, settlements where it is necessary to carry out additional examination of soils are determined. Specialists travel to the localities, take samples and conduct research in the laboratories of scientific organizations, determining the content of radionuclides".

Social protection of the population is the basis of the program on mitigating the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident.

Yesterday, the government approved a new program to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl accident for the next five years. A priority is given to social protection of the population. This includes the provision of medical care, spa treatment and obligatory upgrading of recreational centers for children living in the contaminated areas.
