Introduction of biometric documents into the Belarusian society was considered today at the Palace of Independence.
Alexander Lukashenko and relevant ministers discussed how much the departments and infrastructure are ready for new passports. The ID-card will be used as an internal document. But a biometric passport is needed to travel to other countries. The main demand of the President is to achieve safety of personal data of Belarusians. On the whole, the head of state approved the introduction of this system, but certain points need to be analyzed and refined.
The date for the introduction of ID-cards and biometric passports has not yet been finalized. Much depends on how quickly and efficiently the agencies solve the problems. After all, this is a whole digital ecosystem with electronic services, administrative procedures and, of course, a digital signature. All this is part of the mechanism that will be introduced in Belarus. New passports will not repeal the old ones. The documents will be valid until the end of the term. Therefore, the replacement will take place gradually.
As the Ministry of Internal Affairs suggests, this year up to 800 000 ID-cards and 300 000 biometric passports will be issued. People who receive the card will automatically acquire a digital signature for 10 years and a personal electronic account, which will only work after manual activation. It will contain usage history and personal data. However, the residential address, for example, will only be displayed with the permission and the introduction of a special pin code by the owner.
