City referendum to be held in Brest

29 июня 2020
A popular vote will be held in Brest: local residents will decide what to do with the battery factory. The battery plant was built last year in the Free Economic Zone. Some residents were against the work of the enterprise: in their opinion, the production will harm the environment.

President Alexander Lukashenko suggested holding a referendum during the recent working trip to Brest. The Head of the State spoke with Brest residents and promised to help to solve the problem democratically.

The residents discussed the technical issues of the referendum at the meeting with the leadership. Anyone could express their opinion.

Vitaliy Kazak, a resident of Brest: “The referendum is necessary, we will do everything in a positive way, the city’s authorities are engaged in an unprecedented dialogue.”

Alexander Rogachuk, Chairman of the Brest City Executive Committee: “The city government intends to make this process as open as possible, as clear as possible to people.”

230 000 residents have the right to vote. They plan to hold a city referendum in August after the presidential election. Preparations for voting on the battery plant will begin soon.
