Humanity may face an outbreak of infectious diseases, the WHO and UNICEF warn. The reason is the failure of vaccination programs. The spread of measles is also alarming: in the first two months of this year, the number of reported cases worldwide increased by almost 80%. It has particularly affected Somalia, Yemen, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Ethiopia.
The organizations fear that measles could be a precursor to outbreaks of other diseases that spread more slowly, noting that in 2020, 23 million children did not receive basic childhood vaccines as part of routine health services, the highest number since 2009. In 2019, there were 3.7 million fewer such children.
