Belarusian doctors freed from captivity in Libya

27 декабря 2017

By Darya Belousova-Petrovskaya: Just as a long-awaited New Year's miracle, two Belarusian doctors were finally freed from captivity in Libya. The spouses from Gomel – Inna Babush and Sergei Zdota – have been in this North African country since 2010. They worked there in a private hospital. He is a trauma surgeon. She is an OP nurse.

The fact that the Belarusian doctors were released from captivity in Libya and returned home became known today early in the morning. This is a standard procedure of negotiations – all information is kept in secret for the talks to be successful. Because of the civil war that erupted in Libya in 2011, today the country has neither an embassy of Belarus, nor an embassy of Russia. Therefore, there was practically no place for the doctors to seek help and the situation seemed hopeless.

However, owing to the well-coordinated work of the Foreign Ministries of Libya, Russia, and Belarus, as well as direct support of the Head of Chechnya – Ramzan Kadyrov, the two doctors returned home.

The doctors expressed their gratitude for the joint work of the Belarusian and Russian Foreign Ministries, as well as the help of the Chechen leader. Ramzan Kadyrov personally met with the Belarusians in Moscow.

Tomorrow, Inna and Sergei are leaving for Minsk.
