Europe's selective approach to refugees, coupled with the advantageous juggling of historical facts, is, unfortunately, a modern reality. More and more attempts are being made to rewrite history. The mechanism is the same everywhere: they try to turn the heroic Soviet people, who liberated the Old World from the brown plague, into occupiers. The methods chosen are dirty and shocking to common sense - the cultivation of the the Third Reich symbols, the desecration and destruction of memorials and monuments and just a ban on the celebration of Victory Day. Andrey Semchenko collected the facts.
Ukraine
The today's realities in pro-European Eastern Europe are as follows. The memory of the Soviet past must be destroyed. Only black pages must be left, so that citizens would not even look in the direction of Moscow. A scapegoat was found in Chernigov - a monument to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, tortured by the German Nazis.
Latvia
The celebration of the victory of the Red Army in Latvia was equated with a "dangerous ideology." The country's Saeima banned gatherings near the monuments to Soviet soldiers on May 9. Amendments to the Law on rallies, marches and pickets were justified by the "defense of the democratic state system." Such a law, as expected, caused a flurry of criticism.
The sole purpose of this proposal is to humiliate people, whose ancestors died in the fight against Nazism. I see no other purpose here.
Lithuania
In Lithuania, those wishing to celebrate May 9 are threatened with employment termination. People fear that special services will monitor their participation in unauthorized celebrations, identify the unfaithful, and then submit "black lists" to enterprises. However, something similar should have been expected long time ago from the government of Landsbergis’ grandson, who almost recognized the power of Lithuanian collaborators a legitimate government of 1941.
Italy
And these are the shots from Mussolini's homeland. No matter how publicly cynical and tasteless such products are, wine with images of Adolf Hitler and the symbols of the Third Reich have been sold in Italy for almost 20 years. As a result, the person responsible for the large-scale genocide of millions of people turns into a funny character, bringing millions of euros annually to the manufacturing company. The Overton window on understanding Nazism is gradually expanding.
Poland
Poland stands at the forefront in the struggle against the Soviet legacy. The main enemies are the monuments to the warriors-liberators. At first, they are sprayed with paint and then cynically demolished.
They do not save on dismantling the memory. Marketers and political technologists turn liberators into occupiers. The showy farewell to the unwelcome past is broadcasted live.
But this story is not new - it has been going on since the late 80s. The Mazowiecki government became the founder of the fashion for fighting stone sculptures. The monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky was demolished at that time. In recent years, hundreds of monuments to the Red Army soldiers who died for the liberation of the country have been destroyed in Poland.
In total, there are about sixty such memorials in the country.
According to this logic, the next site to come under the sword of decommunization should be the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. As this was a gift from the Soviet Union, too.
In what way have the stone statues offended the European democrats? And why are they willing to get rid of them?
