Day of Russia celebrated today

The country became sovereign on June 12, 30 years ago. Belarusian Head of the State Alexander Lukashenko has congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on the national holiday.

"This day symbolizes the power and greatness of the Russian state, pride in its centuries-old history, rich culture and traditions. Belarus has great respect for the success of the fraternal people in creating a strong and prosperous Russia, ensuring high quality of life for people and increasing their well - being," the message says. 

The Belarusian leader also expressed confidence that a constructive interstate dialogue based on the principles of mutual respect and support meets the fundamental interests of the residents of the two countries and contributes to strengthening the stability and security in the region. Alexander Lukashenko also sent greetings to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko and Chairman of the state Duma of the Federal Assembly Vyacheslav Volodin.

The traditional Kremlin reception on the occasion of the Day of Russia was canceled due to the situation with coronavirus. Vladimir Putin took part in the solemn ceremony of raising the national flag on Poklonnaya Hill. The Russian leader also presented the Hero of Labor medals. Belarus joined the celebration.

Holiday events were held online in Minsk. Photo exhibition "Russia – from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok" was opened in the Upper City on Svoboda Square.

Dmitry Mezentsev, Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus: "Coronavirus changed the format of the celebration of the day, but it cannot change our attitude to each other. The relationshipis stable, in spite off gas and oil disputes. The trade turnover between Russia and Belarus amounted to almost 36 billion dollars in the past year."

Dmitry Mezentsev also noted that the relations between Belarus and Russia help each other to become more competitive and stronger, especially now and in the post-coronavirus period.
