Chairman of Narva Belarusian Society "Syabry" (Estonia) Lyudmila Annus said at the meeting of the Advisory Council on the Belarusians Abroad at the Foreign Ministry on December 7 that the main task was to popularize the Belarusian culture, BelTA informs.
"Today is the birthday of our society - it has turned 23 years old. Our main task is to promote the Belarusian culture, as well as communication of Belarusians abroad, not only in Estonia, but also with the Belarusians of the Baltic States, many other countries and, of course, with Belarus," she said. - Our twin-town is Borisov, with which we have maintained strong creative ties for 15 years now".
Journalists asked Lyudmila Annus about her attitude towards the demolition of monuments to Soviet warriors who died during the Great Patriotic War in the Baltic States. "It is impossible to talk about it without tears. It's scary," she believes.
Chairman of the Narva Belarusian Society "Syabry" pointed out that when visiting Belarus she always tries to visit historical places, where the memory of those who fought for the liberation of the country from the Nazi invaders is immortalized. She remembered that when she was a schoolgirl in Svetlogorsk school, she came together with her classmates to the village of Ola, where about 2,000 peaceful residents, including 950 children, were shot and burned. After the war the village of Ola was not revived. A memorial complex "Ola" was created on the site of the mass grave, where a monument, a sculpture of a kneeling soldier with a wreath. "It's done very powerfully and makes a great impression. It's a memory," said Lyudmila Annus.
She also said that the Narva Belarusian Society "Syabry" carries out great work aimed at the preservation of historical memory, including about famous Belarusian cultural and literary figures. For example, this year events were held to mark the 135th anniversary of the birth of Marc Chagall, who lived in Narva from 1908 to 1910, and where his artistic career developed. In addition, meetings were organized to mark the anniversaries of famous Belarusian writers.
