Belarusians rank 39th in English Proficiency Index

Belarus ranked 39th in the updated English Proficiency Index. The full rating was published by the  EF Education First.

The EF Education First English Proficiency Index is based on the results of annual global research. The survey was conducted among 2.1 million people from 111 non-English-speaking countries. As a result, Belarus has moved up by five lines in a year to 39th place among the countries with medium level of English

The top three countries in English proficiency are as follows (in ascending order): Austria, Singapore, and the Netherlands. Among  the neighboring countries, Belarus is outranked by Poland - 13, Lithuania - 19, Latvia – 25 and Ukraine -  the 35th place in the ranking. Russia ranked one position lower -  the 40th place.

The researchers also found out that women speak English better than men in Belarus. As for the age group, Belarusians aged 21-40  are the leaders - they speak English better than others.

Residents of Minsk and Minsk Region lead in English proficiency, while the residents of Brest and Grodno regions speak it slightly worse. The knowledge of English is much worse among the population of Gomel, Mogilev and Vitebsk regions.
