The Belarusian-Russian surgeons performed demonstrative surgeries to correct osteogenesis imperfecta in the National Scientific and Practical Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics. The adolescents were fitted with metal structures. They help to hold the joints and make the bones less vulnerable. The operations were a success and there is a positive dynamic. The girl and the boy will walk.
The use of metal structures (telescopic rods) allows to protect the bone for a long time from deformation and even in case a fracture occurs, it will be a fracture without displacement. There should be no consequences.
Mikhail Gerasimenko, Director of the National Scientific and Practical Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics:
“A cluster of specially trained pediatric orthopedic surgeons will be created at the Traumatology and Orthopedics Center, who will be directly involved in surgical treatment of children with osteogenesis imperfecta.”
More than 150 children with brittle bone disease live in Belarus. Of these, 50 need to be operated with the telescopic rod installation. The structures are planned to be delivered in 2023.
