By Nadezhda Serbinenko: Two eleven-graders from Minsk – Vladislav Kaminsky and Andrei Molchan – set three national records on speed assembly of the Rubik's Cube – or speedcubing – at the 5th international championship, which was held in Brest. The competition that has 17 categories brought together 42 people.

The mechanical puzzle was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, a sculptor and professor of architecture fron Hungary. The Rubik’s Cube is the leader among toys on the total number of sales worldwide – so far, around 350 million puzzles have been sold. The world leaders in speed assembly are the US, Australia, and the Netherlands.

Andrei’s personal record is in the 5x5 category. He assembles the Cube faster than anyone in the country – 1 minute 6 seconds.

Vladislav Kaminsky set two national records – in the 2x2 and 3x3 categories. It takes Vladislav about 8 seconds to assemble the Classic Rubik’s Cube.

The Results of Minsk students have already been registered in the database of the World Cube Association. Yet, the two guys are planning to further improve their speed assembly skills. For training, an athlete only needs two things – a Rubik's Cube and a stopwatch. Their next competition is the European Rubik’s Cube Championship.
