By Natalia Breus: The unique exhibition Belarusian Icons of the 17th-21st Centuries has launched in the Vatican prior to the Belarusian President’s visit to Italy and the Vatican.

Alexander Lukashenko has sent greetings to the participants and organisers of the exhibition. “This unique project, which is taking place as part of Belarus’ Year of Culture, demonstrates the inseparable spiritual and aesthetic connection between European peoples and their commitment to religious ideals and values. The exhibition of Belarusian iconography in the Vatican is a significant event.” According to the President, it is an important step toward realising the invaluable legacy of Belarusian culture, an integral part of which is Christian art.

The exhibition consists of a total of 31 icons and 2 hammered icon covers, the most ancient of which date back to the 17th century. The icons are being exhibited in the Vatican for the first time after a thorough preparation. They will be on display until late June.

Alexander Lukashenko is scheduled to visit Italy at the end of the week. Emphasis in the upcoming high-level talks will be placed on economic cooperation. The Belarusian President is also planned to meet with Pope Francis.
