By Marina Romanovskaya: Experts in archaeological research have discovered several unique findings in the territory of Saviour Church of St. Euphrosyne Convent in the city of Polotsk.
One of them is the seal of the Reverend. Earlier, similar artifacts have already been found. But this seal is completely different from the previous ones in the technique of execution and quality.
In ancient times, a seal like this was imprinted on important documents to guarantee their authenticity. Only bishops or princes had such seals. Therefore, it is a unique fact that St. Euphrosyne had it, too.
This seal is the third, which archeologists found in Polotsk during excavations in the territory of the Savior Convent. Experts note that the work is very fine. Previous finds had a different technique and quality.
The condition of the seal is perfect, and it is now in the collections of the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum. Soon, restorers will work with it, and only then it will be exhibited.
Another unique fragment of ancient art was found – a plinthiform brick with drawing on it. The find, presumably, dates back to the 12th century. Never before have researchers found anything like this. It was discovered in a temple-tomb, which has been preserved.
A special expertise is ahead now. And if the opinions are true, archaeologists say, the unique finding in Polotsk will become a world scoop. And while experts continue to work on the territory of Saint Euphrosyne Convent and seek answers to the most popular question – how many more unique objects does ancient Polotsk still have?
