By Elena Bormotova: The foundation of a 12th century building was discovered in the territory of the New Castle in Grodno. Experts suppose this is the Resurrection Church which was captured in the famous engraving by Matthias Zünd. This is the first time that archaeologists find such an ancient and densely packed place of worship. 4 temples are located there at a short distance fr om each other. Some of the materials found there is the plinthiform brick.

Attempts to find this church have been undertaken many times. After all, the traces of the temple were found everywhere. Researchers did not lose hope of discovering the shrine, the construction of which, like the Kolozh Tower, was most likely led by the architect Peter Miloneg.

The territory wh ere the foundation was found is considered to be the zone of the first protection category. All excavation work here is carried out manually, no construction equipment is used. Archaeologists expected to find here the remains of a medieval city as well.

The thickness of the undamaged cultural layer is about 20-30 centimeters. Objects dating back to the 11-12th centuries can be found here too. About 90 lead trade seals were found in the territory. Never before had so many seals been found on such a small patch of land. They will allow archaeologists to establish trade and economic contacts that the ancient Grodno had.

The remains of the ancient temple are conserved at the moment. In the future, perhaps, the place will become a museum exhibition. To open it an archaeological expedition needs to be organized, and it will take more than one season.
