By Elena Bormotova: Documentary archives from London’s Imperial War Museum will be presented in Belarus for the first time. The importance of preserving the memory of the past has been pointed out at today’s press conference of the President.
The documentary The Battle of the Somme, inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World register, has been watched by 20 million people, which is a record for the British film industry.
The screening is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the most large-scale military operations of World War I. The Imperial Museum of London gave its permission to demonstrate a restored digital copy of the film in Belarus. The National History Museum will be showing the documentary with Russian subtitles. The longest film of its era, lasting for 76 minutes, has been reduced to 53 minutes for the museum project.
The exhibition will also feature propaganda posters dating back to the World War I period. Parts of the funds belong to the UK Defence Ministry and the National History Museum. Negotiations are currently underway on presenting the documentary archives in Belarus’ regions.
