By Marina Romanovskaya: Belarusian Written Language Day traditionally takes place in cities that are historic literary centres. Preparations for large-scale Belarusian Written Language Day celebrations in Polotsk have already started despite the fact that the event will take place in September. The memorial sign Polotsk is Belarus’ Statehood Cradle will be unveiled in the city centre. Besides, several major facilities in the district center are planned to be repaired and modernised.

Symbolically, Belarusian Written Language Day will be held in Francysk Skaryna’s homeland in a landmark year for Belarus as 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing.

Polotsk is home to the only Belarusian book printing museum in Belarus. Opened in 1990, its collection comprises over 2,000 exhibits from handwritten manuscripts to contemporary books.

Polotsk will be hosting Belarusian Written Language Day for the third time.
