Darya Domracheva wins Big Chrystal Globe

By Nikolai Stulo: Following the results of the biathlon season, three-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva finally won the Big Crystal Globe. This glorious victory made her go down in the world’s sports history.

Darya’s career began in 2005, when she started representing Belarus at junior competitions. Prior to that, she lived with her parents in the Siberian town of Nyagan. Belarus turned out to be a comfortable environment for bringing her talent to light. Domracheva won the Junior World Championships several times, after which she finally entered adult competitions.

Darya’s further career skyrocketed after winning the bronze medal at the fifth stage of the World Cup. She won her first major award in the pursuit at the Ruhpolding World Cup in 2012, followed by the gold at the World Cup in the Czech Republic. The Sochi Olympics was the culmination of the biathlete’s career as she became the first triple Olympic champion in the history of the sovereign Belarus. The achievement was highly appreciated by the state, with President Alexander Lukashenko conferring the title of Hero of Belarus to the biathlete.

Taking the fourth place at the mass start in Khanty-Mansiysk, Domracheva left behind her main rival Kaisa Makarainen of Finland by 48 points and was awarded the desired Big Chrystal Globe.

So far, Darya Domracheva holds the fourth place in terms of the number of awards won throughout the career, having 28 gold medals. The leader, Magdalena Forsberg, has claimed 42 victories at various competitions.
