Belarus marks Victory Day

By Alexey Volkov: This week, Belarus marked Victory Day. 9 May is a reminder of the end of a catastrophe that must never happen again.

At the moment, there are 8,412 veterans of the Great Patriotic War in Belarus. All in all, every third Belarusian perished in that war. Belarus is a land that was soaked in blood and tears of women and children who buried their fathers and sons. It is a land of all families who lost their closest people and a land of people who survived the war, rose out of its ruins and built a new country. Today, Belarus forever remembers that war is a cancer that corrodes humanity.

On 9 May, a great number of solemn and festive events took place across the country. Veterans received flowers and words of gratitude from everyone. Regrettably, every year there are fewer and fewer veterans in this country, yet every one of them helps us remember those who sacrificed their lives for their homeland.
