The Chairman of the Association of Belarusian Banks Mikhail Provorov commented on the introduction of limits on the withdrawal of foreign currency from banks in an interview to the program "Panorama" on TV channel Belarus 1.
"The problems are not due to the fact that banks do not want to cash dollars or euros to be withdrawn. Today people come and say: Give me the whole amount in cash. Banks have temporarily introduced limits. There are certain amounts that individuals can come and get each month. This is a temporary phenomenon, the situation should probably stabilize in the near future," said Mikhail Provorov.
He stressed that freezing of deposits, or other currency restrictions are out of the question. "Today, we are only talking about the limits on the issuance of foreign currency in cash. "With regard to liquidity in general, the system has foreign currency, which is enough for banks to fulfill their obligations in full. If you need to make some payments, there are no difficulties for the banking system. I don't see the need in any additional administrative measures or procedures to regulate the banking work," said the chairman of the ABB.
He drew attention to the fact that depositors have other options besides the withdrawal of foreign currency in cash. For example, it is possible to extend the deposit on more favorable terms. "What needs to be transferred is transferred to a current account linked to a plastic bank card.
The Association of Belarusian Banks was founded in 1990 to coordinate the activities of credit and financial institutions and now unites 35 banks and institutions. The Association is a founding member of the International Coordinating Council of Banking Associations of the CIS, Central and Eastern Europe.
