President: Our food security is at stake

23 марта 2022
Grain in today's conditions becomes the new gold and oil. Food security issues were discussed at the Palace of Independence on the eve of the spring sowing campaign. This year it is held in non-standard conditions. There is also a hot conflict near the southern borders and sanctions pressure of the West. The restrictions in our region have greatly affected the world prices. The cost of energy, fertilizers and food has skyrocketed. Ukraine, one of the most important world suppliers, can forget about a full-fledged sowing season. So, the demand on the markets will only grow.

Belarus targets for agricultural season 2022

The objective for the agricultural season is to produce 9 million tons of grain, 700,000 tons of rapeseed, 5 million tons of sugar beets. The current dry weather complicates the situation, which is why the President has set tough deadlines for the sowing campaign.

The President also outlined the problems of some regions. In particular, he pointed to low rates of tractors readiness in Vitebsk Region, low rates of accumulation of mineral fertilizers. The country produces enough of them – this is problem of supply. The same applies to fuel. As for the supply of seeds, the issue will also be solved in the near future.

Belarus is ready for sowing campaign

On the whole, the Belarusian agrarians are ready for sowing campaign. Only a few days are left till the beginning of large-scale field work. The agrarian sector provides for about 6% of GDP, and 8% of total employment in Belarus.
