The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was discussed by everyone from Rosatom colleagues to the IAEA Director General. By the way, Yukiya Amano recalled his recent visit to Minsk calling it impressive. Energy Minister Vladimir Potupchik announced the amount spent on the preparation of the Ostrovets NPP site and informed about the start of the construction works.
By Vadim Shcheglov: Another topic discussed at the forum is safety. After the Fukushima tragedy, the IAEA has completely revised the approach to the construction and use of nuclear power plants. After all, there are nearly 450 nuclear reactors in the world today; 70 more are under construction. The Belarusian nuclear power plant is also on this list. IAEA experts are carefully monitoring every stage of the construction and recommended other countries to learn from Belarus.
Yukiya Amano, IAEA Director General: I attended an emergency situations center in Belarus. It made a great impression on me. We know that your country has been making efforts in emergency response and produces appropriate equipment to monitor the situation and reduce the impact on the environment. After the Fukushima accident, we recommended the Japanese Government to seek help from Belarusian specialists.
Our country will continue developing the infrastructure for its own nuclear program. This was stated by Energy Minister Vladimir Potupchik. Belarus has already spent 250 million dollars for the NPP site preparation and is ready to begin the construction in the near future.
All the forum participants advocate peaceful use of the atom and prevention of nuclear terrorism. Belarus also maintains this attitude. The NPP is needed to ensure energy independence of the country and not to fall behind in scientific progress.
